It’s been a long time since I kept some bigger cichlids in my 375 (96x30x30) but it’s time for a revamp and was wondering about the different wild Oscar’s out there. I have done the single type group of 5-6 and had some pair off thing but I don’t want to breed them now. Do they/will they try and pair up if there are of different types of wild Oscar’s or is it possible to have 2 different ones peacefully in that size tank with out her SA cichlids? For instance the Rio Caqueta and rubroocellatus that are on TUIC list right now.

I feel I may know the answer I’m just wondering what has others experienced. I have only keep some wind Peruvian Oscar’s I got from TUIC about 10 years ago. TIA.

With most new world cichlids (including Oscars), different species from the same genus, almost always come from different geographical locations, and meet don't in nature.
Those differing geographical locations are what contributed to them evolving into separate species.
You hardly ever find 2 Parachromis species "together" in the same location, or same habitat, or 2 species of the genus Vieja species together in the same river, lake, or habitat.
Not saying they can't coexist in captivity that way. But....
They will often breed, and you are left with the dilemma, what do I do with all the non-legitimate species offspring?

I get the tendency of aquarists to like a certain form, and to want to keep an all Vieja tank, or all Oscar species tank, but this is contrary to the natural selection process, where only the fittest and best adaptive species will survive in a habitat.

A crassipinnis is basically a Paraguayan, Matto Grosso species.

Ehhh I figured that would be the case but wanted to ask out loud if lol. I'll just stick to one type in this setup. I have had Oscars pair and breed but I always kept them paired alone in a tank. How hyper aggressive do they get...will they kill the community in a 375 or just take over a corner for a bit of time? I know each fish/pair can be different but in general. I would not try and raise the fry I just like the motions they go through and the spawning colors. If I did try and raise any id just remove the rock they laid on.

Oscars would seem to be pretty placid in a 375 gal community, as long as they are housed with other similarly, non-aggressive tank mates from east of the Andes, those they couldn't swallow.
The larger the tank, the less aggressive they become, the only time I've found be be other than pussy cats, is when they are kept in a cramped space..

That was kinda my feeling too they have always seem chill but I know when spawning things can change. I just never had that experience yet of them spawning with tankmates. I am not sure of the other stock list yet...I really miss my old F1 Peruvian oscars so I want to get another wild verity and go from there. Now to decide on what one to go with. Thanks!
