Ok, so I started this new job working at Universal studios for the photogrpahy company. Well the company has been giving me a lot of hours, which would be great but Im a full time student and lately its been really taking a toll on me, I spent the last two weeks up til 2 and waking up at 7 everyday between work and school. Today I had two exams so Saturday I had to call out of work to study, and when I went into work Sunday they gave me lip saying I could easily get fired for taking off with an excuse like that. Now heres my current problem, I would like to switch my availability to just weekends but I don't know if their going to try to get me fired if I do that or not, what would be the best way to ask for an availability change? If they fire me I would be upset but I just can't work full time and go to school, its my first year at a university from CC and it takes a lot more work to get the grades I want, I kinda bombed my first Bio test, luckily we get one drop but it was supposed to be one of our easier tests :(.

Go in, find your boss, explain your situation and why you need to change your availability. if they're unwilling or are not in position to work with you, you'll need to find a new job. i know you don't have alot of time on your hand but it's easier to get hired while you're already working PLUS you would be hired with your availability already clearly stated. Win situation for everyone involved.

i know from my work experience there's nothing more annoying to me then people's lack of candid when it comes to their availability and their plans for education or another job. most company's have open door policies but they can't read people's mind. it's easier to plan then it is to react. you're forcing them to react with your sick calls and sudden availability change. Get the info out there far enough ahead of time and they can plan around it instead of reacting. Don't get me wrong, life changes suddenly as we make decisions everyday. i'm just sharing an employers point of view

Thanks man, I appreciate the feedback. I hope theyll understand, ill just have to tell them that this way I wont leave them hanging at all.

tell them school is more important. and it is.

quit if they give you a hassle. you are in your first year. the study habits and work ethic you develop now will help you get through second, third and fourth years where you have 4 times the amount of work you do now. trust me, I know.

a few years from now, if you don't get that degree/diploma and you are out in the job market again, you are screwed.

at your age earning that education is paramount.

I used to work part time through university too, and I would book time off if I had exams to study for.

do the same.

if they say no, quit.

its just not worth it.

if you must have a job for financial reasons, find another job where they are more flexible and understanding of your academics.

^^ yea I agree, plus I work a bit at the local hockey rink, I dont make as much but theyre way more flexible and understanding and I can always up my hours (although I still wouldnt make as much as I do here) but it would be enough and would better suit my situation

Sounds like you've already got options. Good luck

i would quit if they give you crap and tell them school first... except be nice about it when you quit if you need to use them as a refrence I guess...

I totally agree with the above. But if you have to chose one or the other - chose school. Ive been in an out of school several times and I know it gets harder each time to find the time in your life. Plus the sooner you finish school the sooner you can reap the rewards. Explain your situation, dont bail on them right away and if you have to go maybe you can get a good reference.
Good Luck.

I used to work for a theme park as a Senior Supervisor. We usually work around school schedules. If they don't want to, then you should look for a new job. Theme Parks will hold you down...trust me...I know.
