Dipnetting Unique Specimens?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had them in tanks before but never was impressed. They used leaf cover during the day in the tank and rocked back and forth like a leaf during the day then were active at night but it just never impressed me. So, now I just toss them back when I go dipping back home. The same spot produces sunfish, bass, bullheads, red finned pickerels, and the occasional darter so they do have a stiff competition.

As far as "unique" native fish, the pirate perch is pretty cool. I agree that it's not a particularly interesting tank specimen, nocturnal and hides mostly. Also near imposible to get off live food. I kept a few in a planted 70 with a lot of gambusia and they were fat and happy. Boring, but unique.
