Dirted Tank 29g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Planning to build a wooden stand to house 90 up top and 65/75 under. I know the tank in question is 48x18x? which is the same footprint as the 90, but just not sure how tall. I need to figure out how to run the 90 on a sump so I think I will have the 90 and 75 next to the 29 with a sump for the 90 under the 29. Im thinking the bottom tank would be too low to plumb into the sump. Stock will be planted in 90 and texas in 75. Will try adding the jacks with the texas and see if they can get along. 29 will be empty until i get a gecko or something lol. Will probably start with some plants only. The 55 will go back to my friend and the 45 will be empty until i find room or have excess plants in the 90, which will be after a month no doubt.

Got the 90 in house. Forgot how sweet the size of that thing was. Decided against stacking the 90 and 75 due to the massive amount of weight, and I don't want to hide the bottom tank from the world. Next step is to get/build a stand for the 75 and design the plumbing for the 90, which will include a complete pressurized CO2 system. And of course get the 75 in house...

I had done some research on AquaDurt a while back.. I've heard mixed reviews. Some say it is the same as ADA and others say it is too light and messy. I'm tempted to just do soil and pebbles/sand since I've had decent results. My wallet cringes when I think of filling the 90 with 5" of substrate at $20 a bag, let alone a giant sloping hill. Who knows... we will see..

Kribs are looking sweet. Got them from Vienna Aquarium in Leesburg, VA. My only regret is I didn't have the big tank set up or I would've bought a few more. He had some really sweet rainbow fish as well, but there isn't any room in my 29 for holding. If you are located anywhere near Leesburg I suggest you check it out.

I feel your pain with using ADA a out, a good trick is to build the bottom using another substrate or the larger ada soil, and then covering just the top layer with the finer dirt for a cleaner look :)

Thank you! Just got 10 rainbows so you can guess the 29 is crowded (42 fish inside). 90 will go up this weekend. I will try and document the build. Also bought some SERA Germany Substrate. I think ill do a layer of SERA then top soil and then gravel. Will be running a Durso standpipe in the overflow box and a sump in the stand. CO2 reactor will be tied into the return line. LFS had some nice Roseline sharks but I didnt think the 29 could hold all that even for a few days..

Got a pair Male/Female of each: Goyder River, Celebes, Ornate, Turquoise, Boesemani plus a shot of my Bristlenose!

Plumbing is set up, letting the silicone cure for a while. I'm tempted to do a test fill after work today but may hold off another day just to be sure. The Rainbows are really starting to color up in the 29. They will be killer when they get all that space in the 90. Once the 90 is well established I may try and breed a pair at a time, as well as the Kribs too.

90 is filled, stocked, and planted. Picked up 6 congo tetras and 2 female Celebes Rainbows. Lost a female celebes when they were in holding and one of my goyder river rainbows jumped out :rip , but all are settled in now and doing fine. Have roughly 50 finsh in the 90 still need some corydoras and a loach for the snails. Waiting for the lfs to get some ludwigia and rotilla and it should be looking really nice.
