my only suggestion is to buy the wool in bulk, the biggest size available to u. you will save money and save time, by not having to go out and buy it..over and over.. and over.again...
lmao thats pretty ridiculous. At least you know its working! Plecos over 5 inches are never a good idea, at least for clean up wise. Snails are much better
I got the plec at this size, but I never expected him to clean. I do have a mystery snail who's been going strong for ages now. My loaches haven't touched him. Maybe they are overfed?

wow thats crazy, my filter sock gets so dirty i have to clean it 2 times a day. helps keep my sump 10x cleaner
How fine is your filter sock? I used to run a very fine one and I had to clean it once or twice a day or it would blow off the pipe it was attached to.

I have around the same number of clown loaches and have to clean the wet/dry mechanical media 2-3 times a week. That's why I got stainless steel mesh so I can just hose it out.
I only have the smaller bristlenose plecos. They're better algae eaters and are a bit afraid of the loaches so they don't steal their food.
That's the reason I asked the question. I was worried that this might be some horrible, fast-growing algae or bacteria, since it seemed disproportionate to the amount of food I feed.

Yeah, that is a possibility. What bugs me is that whenever I go into my LFS, they have much more heavily stocked tanks and their filter wool never seems to get dirty.
