I am looking to get some Marimo Moss balls, but alot of the ones I see at petco/petsmart look dirty. Its like they are turning gray or have hair alge growing over them.

Are the balls in question done for or can they be cleaned up?

Any info would be helpful.

You can guys can send HOUSE64 or DragonHunter a PM and ask. Because they are really familiar with hairy balls.

Im gonna assume that was not a serious answer...

Or EBay sells them all the time...

That doesnt really answer my question either...

Cleans your balls

You have to squeeze them from time to time...The ones you see in petco/petsmart dont have the right lighting. In nature these balls turn over rapidly so no dust or debris settles very long. Just squeeze it near your intake and place it back.

Second this ^^

From what I've found in nature they pearl and the O2 causes them to float to different parts of their habitat.

The ones I see at petco are not real marimo balls. But java moss they made into a wannabe marimo ball. Try finding them at LFS's. Also, as far as I know you can clean them and they can bounce back. But if they are brown or black I wouldn't bother.
