Dirty Marimo Moss balls

Moss ball is a good algae that does filtering water very well, low care and look cool. I have some in my tank. You can keep it as a ball or you can take out small pieces and grow them on wood. They can live in low light and low Co2. Most of moss ball in stores are kinda dirty. when you bring them home, you should wash them before put them in aquarium. This is how I do. I put them in a small bucket and fill it with water. I squeeze the moss and shake it a few times in water. After that I dump the water and do over again until the water is clear, then put them back to tank. Note if you use your fish tank water to fill up the bucket to wash them, then it less likely to float. If you wash them with tap water then they may float in tank . Don't worry , if it does float. It will sink back in a few days or a week or two. When looking to buy a moss ball, pick out the one with green color and good looking shape. It should not has any other algae growing on it. Brown or gray spot show on a moss ball is mean it hasn't get enough light on that spot. Turn them to the light. They will show green color again , but it will takes sometime to recover.
