Disappearing Neons.....Whose the Culprit?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup I had goldfish that will eating feeder guppies. I had a blind comet goldfish in a 30gal with small guppies. Thought the guppies are safe but the goldfish reduced the guppy population to just four larger female guppies.

I'm almost positive it was the comet. I've raised almost every type of goldfish anf some koi. They will eat almost every live fish it can fit in its mouth. One time I was cleaning my tank (180 gallon) with 2 10 inch koi and a couple of 5 inch comets an 2 blackmoors (pond for the koi would be ready in 2 days. I added about 10 2inch goldfish thinking they would be safe but as soon as I put them into the tank, it was a feeding frenzy with all of the fish that was already in the gobbling them up, especially the koi. Lessoned learned. Goldfish and koi will eat other fish.

That's crazy. I way underestimated the predatory nature of goldfish/carp.

I've never seen that with our Koi lol. When they breed in the pond or we get new smaller ones, we normally let them grow out some in the tank until they get bigger, and have never lost much, but for the most part the Koi are fairly small in the tank. Though for the most part there's only ever been the Rainbow Shark and the Chinese Algae Eater in the tank, and it just continuously runs. Really would've never expected the Comet to be a threat.

Have you checked the back of your tank to make sure there not jumping out. They could be dying and your other fish eating there bodies away before you see them. Neon do die some times takes buying more until you get a group that survive. Your Rainbow shark could be harassing them to death they are known to be aggressive toward other fish.

He's only aggressive towards the Comet LOL. Same with the Algae Eater. No one likes the Comet. Otherwise though, the Tetras all sit in his little "territory" with him, and he doesn't care. He's pretty calm for a Rainbow Shark. We did check behind the tank, and nothing is there. There's not really much we can do at this point lol. The 55 Gallon is occupied by the Rats, the Koi Pond is still freezing cold, and I have a little 1.5 gallon nano tank, that is good for absolutely nothing. At least he's eating the $1.00 fish.

Comet probably eats them. Chinese algae eater may contribute to their deaths. I have a couple CAEs that kill smaller fish in the tank. They chase them all the time.

Definitely the comet, goldfish can be quite predatory. I had a goldfish that ate a Corydoras a few years ago, you can just see it stuck in his throat.... :irked:

Off topic:
What's the fish in the tank?

On topic:
I agree with everyone. Goldfish will eat anything it can fit in its mouth. I had kept a goldfish before with cons (early years of fish keeping). I got the cons small about the same size as the goldfish about 1.5" the goldfish outgrew the cons and he became the only inhabitant in my tank. Bought an oscar the same size as him. Oscar outgrew him and the oscar became the only inhabitant. Lol.
