I used SeaChem Prime for 5 years and never was a probably. You should definitely add prime before refilling tap water. This would allow Prime to work instantly. A UV would also help keep your water clear and free of microbes.

.

i put seachem safe(powder form of prime) in with the tank when i refill the tank for water change, when you do it that way you should dose for the entire amount of the tank(just like the instructions on the bottle/jar)

also if your heater is is raising your temps above its own settings it means the heater is broken and is stuck on "ON". invest in a quality heater, results may still vary tho.

My room is just super hot hahaha. Okay so will definetely just put seachem before a water change. Another question is how long til the tap water is good to go?

Buy you don't use it before the water change. You drain your water like normal, them add prime dosed for the entire tank volume when you begin adding your new water

Alright got it. Thanks for the advices and help guys. Will definetely be more cautious fir now on. Good thing I had some money saved up to start over and buy these equipment. Just dont know what to stock now. What would be a good african cichlid theme tank after my water is ready? Also whats the difference between detoxifying nitrite and nitrate than removing them?

yeah man sorry for your loss btw, i hope you dont quit the hobby :)

a different lake?

as for nitrite and nitrates, the bacteria in your filter break down ammonia (fish waste) into nitrite then other bacteria in the same filter break down the nitrite to nitrates, and water changes is what takes out nitrates, only other way to get rid of nitrates is to either use some sort of chemical abosorber like seachem purigen or carbon(but carbon absorbs everything) and for those you have to replace them when they are used up, or recharge them as in the case of purigen. or have plants that will absorb the nitrates, algae also absorbs nitrates but they can break down and re-release ammonia back into your water, same goes for plants if they start to die. but both those methods arnt as effiecent as just removing the water through a water change, unless there are a massive amount of plants.

Thinking of just haps like sand divers, malawi trout, eye biters, venustus, boryeli, electric blue, blue dolphins, maybe emperor cichlid. Mostly going to be a male only tank gonna take a break from breeding/growing out then reselling will definetely get more clown loaches just cannot say no to them better than any synos in my opinion! My lfs here has them in assorteds for $5-$10 they dont know what they are but I do so I just buy them. Or make a victorian tank but they hybridize very easily. Just weary as they hormone the crap out of both kinds of these cichlids.
