Disaster!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I get out, it won't be permanent, just until we've moved and gotten everything settled down again. Everything's just too crazy right now for me to be dealing with dying fish like this... especially when they're my favorite fish.

Sorry...

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I do agree that no two tanks will be the same, Yes basic params such as PH, Nitrite and Nitrate will be the same BUT

Carbonate Hardness, Disolved oxygen, Hardness, Phosphates etc will play a part. Your PH test kit may seem very similar but how accurate these are we cannot tell, it could be a large difference and Ammonia is more toxic - there could have even been a spike due to new bio load.

Our Thermometers may also look very similar but do not forget that a tiny difference feels a lot to us and we are probably way less sensitive.

As a precaution I would drip next time just to rule this out.

He may have been weak in the current tank and then just this small stress tipped him over.

We used to see it a lot with reptiles where a small move was enough to allow something like a parasite get the upper hand at a time of stress.

The male wasn't weak in any way I could tell. He was an aggressive eater, was a healthy weight, and wasn't getting picked on. Other than being in a slightly smaller than ideal tank, he appeared in perfect health. I think he just got picked on so bad it was too much for him.

Well, the female seems ok, except that her left eye has turned completely red. She is showing interest in food, although I didn't actually see her eat a piece. I'm going to do a water change a little later tonight. I may try removing a couple of her current tankmates to the other tank (and they can be damned if the get picked on too).

sounds like something duffed them up then.

I would not rule out weakness though - wild animals cover up weakness to stop predators, this is why wild deer look perfect one minute and then keel over the next to stop wolves etc hunting them.

Do not forget that you feel lousy before a cold but nobody could tell you were sickening?

Female is doing fine now. A little bit (1/2") of the end of her tail turned white and fell off, but the tip looks fully healed already. Also, the red cap (blood?) over her left eye has fallen off, and her eye looks perfectly fine as well. She's active and searching for food. I'm going to feed normally tonight.

Yah, she's almost back to normal. Her behaviors a little different, a little more aware of her tankmates now, where as before she pretty much ignored them unless they were trying to steal food from her.

She's eating heartily again, looks good, and is completely healed except for one little nick out of the back of her disk. Her tail looks funny though, since the tip of the stinger is now almost even with the tip of her tail...
