I've got two peruvian motoro's (both about 6/7" disc) in a 55 HOLDING tank right now, with 6, 4" Bala sharks (Balantiocheilus melanopterus) and 5 5" red fin barbs (not sure of exact species, shape similar to the sharks only thicker, black line along lateral line, and red fins). They've all been together for about a month, the rays were on their own for the last 4 months and have grown at least an inch in that time, being fed both earthworms and chopped shrimp (which they take with vigour!).
I awoke this morning to find a scrape on the front of the males' disc. Best description without pics (I'll try but my camera no longer focuses) is the skin is scraped back, with the flap hanging there (like when you scrape your knee and the flap of skin is still there but sore underneath). It agitates him as he's holding his disc up right at the scrape, but is fine otherwise (eating and acting normally otherwise so far). My guess is he was trying to get behind one of the filters and caught his disc on the intake tube (tank is filtered with an Eheim 2213 and two AC 300's with bi-weekly 40% water changes). Is there anything I can use/do to prevent infection of this wound, or should I just keep up what I'm doing (maybe more water changes), and hope that he's healthy enough that'll heal on it's own?
TIA!
