just curious what you guys think this may be. I do my regular water changes, my water is pristine. I got this little guy about a week ago, saved him from LFS cause theyre dumb. They had him in a fish bowl with an air line cause they ran out of tanks!!!!!!!!!!!!:WHOA: I got him about 30 minutes after they put him in. Im just curious if this is disc rot or just him getting used to the substrate. My female retic shows absolutely no signs of this and its only on one side under the male. any thoughts???? sorry for the picture quality, its my phone. Thanks.

Do you mean your substrate sticking to your ray? Or the pattern on the underside of the disc?

If its the substrate, then its pretty common. If its the pattern, well, thats pretty normal. Someone asked about it yesterday or 2 days ago. My retic also has the the pattern under the disc too except it goes all around the ray.

Its not the pattern, i can kinda see where its slightly flaking. The sand does stick to him cause he burys himself alot, but i looked really close and it looks kinda like its shedding just on the one side.

If it looks like its shedding, Id say the slime coat is coming off. Keep your water clean, turn off your lights, maybe a bit of salt, and you should be fine.

Ok im new to the salt thing, as in how much, what to use, how to add it??? And wouldnt adding salt be kinda like adding it to an open wound?? Also, this doesnt look like disc rot to anyone???

I cant see anything, but from what you're discribing, Id say its slime coat. Use morton kosher salt. 3lb of salt per 100 gallons. Don't add salt directly to your tank as it will burn your rays while it is dissolving, mix it in a bucket with water and then add it in. You can use the regular API aquarium salt, but IMO Mortons is better, and costs less. DO NOT USE TABLE SALT.

alrighty, ill give that a shot tomorrow, thanks!!

It is an issue. But more than likely if your water is pristine and you know what you are doing, it will heal with time. At least give it a month or two under the assumption that whatever caused is was due to how the lfs housed it. It is not disc rot. I don't know what it is, but I have seen it before on my own rays. It is a superficial issue, not to say it can't be terminal, but I have seen it on many rays. It may be due to cramped quarters or nitrates. Disc rot is a lot different, you will notice it from above, the disc will look like it is getting eaten away at.

good luck! a friggin fish bowl with a bubbler! are you kidding! not even a sponge filter?
