Ok so I bought a fish that labeled as kyoga flameback. My lfs told me it would color up very shortly after adding to tank but it’s been 2-3 weeks and haven’t even shown any sign of coloration. He’s super active though and doesn’t get picked on. I would say he’s one of the competitors for tank boss. Can you guys help me confirm this is a kyoga flameback. And if it is how long would it take for him/her to show it’s true color. All the other fish in the tank is showing great color except this guy.

Tank dimensions and a list of the other species and numbers you are keeping would be helpful.

It can be hit and miss for any males to color up depending on tank mates even though you aren't seeing aggressive behaviors from the other fish.

Well 3 fish I bought was labeled as red empress but as they are coloring up they resemble more of a German red. I have 3 lemon jakes. 1 venestus. 2 acei blue, and 1 colbolt blue and 1 kyoga flameback. but the 3 mbuna will be removed into a 40 gallon as soon as it’s Fully cycled until I can afford to upgrade my peacocks, venestus, and kyoga flamback into a 125 than the mbuna will be transferred back into the 75.

Two issues. I would not expect anyone to color well with the cobalt in the tank. And even after he is out, I have never found Victorians to color well in a male tank.

the 3 mbuna I have Is new to tank. Maybe 3-4 days new. They will be removed as soon as I have the 40 gallon cycled and will be put back in the 75 with more mbuna as soon as I move into my new house and have the money to upgrade to a 125 for the peacocks and haps. Most of my peacocks are males but I didn’t know the rest were female because they were to small to sex at the time. The females will be traded off for males as soon as I have the time to stop into my lfs.

I will be surprised if you ever get color out of the flameback unless you someday move him to a mixed gender tank with females of his own.

these darn Red Fin piebalds did pretty well for a few days... when they weren’t ripping each other...

OP - i got victorians from Christmas not colored up yet sadly...

Clarification. Exum has mixed gender so they should color, at least when spawning. OP has all male. I would not expect much color in the all-male scenario from Victorians in general.
