discus and ick

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hate to beat a dead horse, but I have to agree with all the above posts....Although I do not keep discus any longer, I used to breed them (My avatar is one of my breeder females that I raised)......I never had ich on any of my discus, but I also performed water changes every other day (At a minimum). Keep up the water changes, keep them warm and you will never have a problem keeping beautiful discus.....Enjoy the hobby.

I was planning on continuing the water changes. I also added an additional mechanical filter prior to entrance to my sump and yuck! after only 2 days it's disgusting from the left over beefheart and other stuff. I'm sure that was just getting into my filter sock, decomposing and turning the water foul so I'll keep you guys updated but so far so good.

Anyone have any thoughts on aquarium salt in a discus tank?

You discus will definitely show better growth and improved health with increased water changes. Remember that its impossible to do too many water changes with discus. You can drain the tank until the fish are lying flat on the bottom glass, and its fine as long as the water temp. and PH are close to the same as the old water. I've never used salt with discus. Some people say it does this or that, but I've never seen any proof one way or the other. We've been raising discus at our house for years without using any salt.
