As long as you get adult discus, they are fine in a planted tank. Juvies don't usually tolerate planted tanks well, because juvies need higher temps., 84-to 86 degrees, multiple feedings 3-5 times daily, and very clean water to properly grow and prevent health problems and stunting. All that feeding fouls water quickly. It makes ideal conditions difficult to maintain in a planted tank. For what it's worth, a planted environment is not natural for discus anyway. They are more for humans than discus. In the wild, discus spend most of their lives among submerged tree roots and fallen timber in flooded forests off the main river. PH of the water in these areas range from 5.0 to around 6, with little to no plant life on the bottom. Collectors have reported catching discus in such areas where the water temp. ranged from 80 to 103 degrees F. Not your typical planted tank environment.
