I think i am going to go with tetras over hatchetfish, as in the past all of my hatchets have found ways to jump out of well covered aquariums.

As for stocking, i am very flexible, as long as i can get the discus in. If i wanted a 120 gallon discus tank with 10 discus, how many of each of the other species would you guys recommend? (Lemons, corys, and some sort of algae eater). I would prefer to stay kind of biotopic, at least with the fish, if possible

what kind of fish are you looking for?

little fish
top dwelling fish
calm fish
schooling fish?

mostly just discus compatible - I already know i want Corydoras and Lemon Tetras. The only other thing i want is some sort of algae eater that is from SA and is compatible with discus. I also would like recommendations on the number of the corys, lemons, and algae eater to go with 10 discus in a 120 gallon tank(4x2x2)

A 120 would work, but if you want large discus start with a 75 and grow them out. Keep up on water changes and feed frequently. I'd recommend avoiding the otos as they often do suck on the slime coat of the discus. Also, the neons do not do that well at the temps needed for discus, and will not last that long. Instead go for cardinal tetras.

he summed it up in 1!! great info wyld!

I dunno - i dont really like the looks that much - i like otos, but if they are a threat to the discus, then they are out. I was thinking farowellas, but i dunno. Would "bulldog" plecos work? I have one with my angelfish in my community tank and have had not problems - would they work? Maybe 3 - 6 of them?

Wouldn't be a biotope tank with anubias in there, as they are from africa, and also because domestic discus have a native home in aquariums, not the wild.

That's why I said *I know, not true authentic*. If every biotope tank contained only wild caught specimens, there would be very few in this hobby. It is a mere representation.

He/She does have a point - some tank bred fish actually look like their wild counterparts, while others, like discus, angels, guppies, etc, are more frequently found in domestic color morphs which do not resemble their wild counterparts in coloration. Either way, i will probably skip anubias in this tank.

Domestic discus, like what people are use to seeing, look nothing like the wild discus they came from.

Ive heard people have the same problem with farowellas as otos, ie, they suck slime coat. I keep BNs with my wild discus, and Ive never had an issue. i also keep L134s , but they dont eat much algae.

as for numbers, I'd go for ~15 lemons, and 6-8 corys (see my earlier post for which species are compatible), with maybe a pair of algae eaters. Stocking levels will be partly determined by filtration and water change schedule
