where are you located? i know a breeder in town and he sells the best around here. the lfs' are terrible compared to what he has...

if u decide on wild discus... a few breeders and LFS owners told me that when wilds breed with another type of wild, their offspring dont look as good as thier parents... as opposed to breeding a wild with..lets say a marlboro, blue diamond, or any of the new variants....then the offspring would be spectacular...

i currently have 5 cuipera discus in a 55g planted... i am considering adding 1 blue diamond... or a leopard... something more colorful than my wilds...

Richard, I would say you need to research these fish alot

I agree. Rich you need to do ALOT of homework before you tackle something like discus. a 120g will be a big tank to grow them out as well. If you decide to try it, save your money and get the largest sized discus you can as the juveniles require frequent feedings, higher temps, and more water changes. You cannot skimp on foods or maintenance and have them thrive.

Richard... Please go to simplydiscus and read read read.. They will give you tons of valuable info as well as the realities of raising discus. They also will be able to give you feedback on various breeders as well as somethingsphishy.. If you can find a local breeder, which you should be able to do, that is the best way to start. Start with young juvies about 3+ inches,, not babies.. Once you learn to care for them then you can go for the smaller ones.. With discus there definitely is a learning curve. They are a wonderful fish to keep and breed but do require more of a commitment than your average tropical fish..
If you decide to go forward with your project, in this economy, I think you should be able to work out a good deal with a local breeder.
I assume, since you are just starting with them, you are talking about trying to raise and breed tank raised, not wild, and raise them for yourself . If you want a certain type of fry then you need to keep only that strain of discus in that tank as they can and will interbreed with other color strains.. If you just want to experience the fun of watching the breeding/raising behavior then it really doesn't matter.. Everyone has different favorites.. Once you find a breeder go for a visit and you will find your fav.. Good luck with your project but before you invest please read read read... while they are not as delicate as once thought, they deserve the very best care you can provide.. HTH Sue:D

I'd get the cheapest first for now then move on to the more nicer discus. I've ordered 5 assorted discus from this site and they're all doing fine, had to quarantine them first in case they had any diseases. I"m happy with the different selection they gave me, and would order from them again.
