Discus Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
 First let me tip my cap to ya for investigating how deep this water is BEFORE diving in. Research is most benificial NOW rather than later. As others have commented, Discus do require a bit more attention, discipline & dedication than some others. Rather than 3-5, you'll want 5 or 6 Discus to start out in your 55g. If your Ph is stable & not extreme (hi/lo), you'll most likely do ok. Stability is key. Temp is also very important. A reliable heater able to maintain a consistent lo to mid 80's temp is critical. I keep mine at 86/87. As a beginner, continued exchanges in a Discus dedicated forum (Simply Discus) might be helpful. Finding a reputable Discus breeder should not be too difficult given your location. Your budget will dictate whether you'll begin with juvies (less expensive-more work) or sub-adults (more expensive-less work). Full adults are the most expensive because someone did all the hard work for you. Take your time & don't hesitate to investigate. "T"

My current arowana tank temperature is 82. Ph-6-7 ammonia-0.25

Tap water 6.5-7
Ammonia- 0.00

I understand that for my discus tank my temperature will face to be around 85
Ph around 6.5
Ammonia 0.00
And I will have to do water changes 1-2 times a week

Questions
1. What are the benefits of Having bare bottom?
2. Feeding schedule for juveniles 2-2.5 in
3. How can I probably acclimate my discus?

Most likely I will get a total of 6.
3 blue diamond
3 turquoise

Feeding schedule for juveniles 2-2.5 in

 Let me stop you here! Growing out juvies is very work intensive. Because of the 3 to 4 times daily feedings, the W/C regimen is more like twice a day rather than twice a week like you've stated.
The 'stickies' in the beginner section of the SimplyDiscus forum offer a wealth of info & will keep you from some costly or fatal mistakes.
Take time to consider ALL your possibilities before a final decision. "T"

buying 4" or larger discus is the best way to go. you won't need bare bottom and less wc's. as moneygetter1 said go to simplydiscus and you will find all the info you will need. there is a lot of bad info and old wives tales about discus. you don't need low ph. except for breeding wilds. I keep wilds in 7.6 ph and do wc's with tap water and prime. domestics are raised and bred in ph as high as 8.6. just keep the ph steady. juvies need the higher temps. my temps are at 82. any higher and the tetras and cories may not like it. my tank has been running for more than 2 1/2 years and my wilds have grown from 4" to 7".
