I am thinking of starting a discus tank out of my 55 gallon. Is this enough room for discus? The tank is 48"x20"x12", your standard 55gallon. Other fish in the tank would be 2 shovel nose limas and some clown loaches. I am thinking of putting 2 discus in the tank but should I put more, do they school?

i would think its okay, i did keep CL & discus species previously. Theoractically, they should go along as these are peaceful creatures,not predators.just start in a small school and progressively once all in stable condition, you can expand but bear in mind discus are fussy about water parameters,cheers!
With good filtration and water changes it should work. I've kept Discus in 55s for more than 4 years with no problems. Curently have a 55 with 6 wild caught Discus, 4 Heckles & two Browns, together with 13 Wild Caught Angels and about 40 wild caught Cardinals. All of them adults.
A 55 will work good, get around 4-6 discus tho, and if they are juvues do 2-3 50% water changes a week till they get adult size or you will have a football discus like me in my 55 gallon. I might worry about the shovels, are you planning on moving them?

Pictures of both my Discus tanks are in the "Official" photo thread in this section. Both tanks have Wild Angels including Altums. The 55 is in page 13 and the other one a 75(with 8 Heckels and 6 very large altums and 2 clown loaches) in page 14. Both tanks have twice weekly water changes of about 30% and AC filters plus white sand bottoms to help with filtration..
