With good filtration and water changes it should work. I've kept Discus in 55s for more than 4 years with no problems. Curently have a 55 with 6 wild caught Discus, 4 Heckles & two Browns, together with 13 Wild Caught Angels and about 40 wild caught Cardinals. All of them adults.

Seriously??????!?
What kind of filtration?
Water change regimen? Enquiring minds GOTTA know!
Please?

yeah that's pretty crazy.

I am thinking of starting a discus tank out of my 55 gallon. Is this enough room for discus? The tank is 48"x20"x12", your standard 55gallon. Other fish in the tank would be 2 shovel nose limas and some clown loaches. I am thinking of putting 2 discus in the tank but should I put more, do they school?

They do prefer to school. The thing to think about is that they do better in groups of more than 3. So 4 or more is better. It IS possible to just have two, but 4 is better, and three causes fights--so 3 is a no-no.

The other thing to think about is water changes. How often and how much do you want to do?
IME, at 12 gallons water per Discus, they need about 85% water changes weekly. At 15 gallons per Discus it drops down to about 60%, at 18 gallons, it drops down to about 50%.

That's just IME, hope it helps.:)

Inquiring minds needs to read the posts that comes after it. Your questions were already answered including reference to pictures.

However, I suppose you are not really interested in the answers to your own questions. You have your preconcieved unshakeable beliefs and you have your own ways. You can do it your way and I do it my way. My way works too.

bump for my question.

Sorry, Somehow, I thought that the same guy was asking the same question about a different tank.

The 75 looks like it would be very nice for Discus set up just the way it is.

As for how many, it depends on who you want to listen to.

I have tanks right now that are stocked as follows:
1) 90gal with 12 gals / Discus and 1 gallon / Tetra
2) A 125 with 7 Discus and a 6" Sailfin Gibby--which equals about 13.5 gallons per Discus
3) 29 gal with 14.5 gals/Discus
4)100gal with 20 gals/Discus

Here's the deal,
The 90 needs about 80 % weekly
The 125 needs about a 70% water change weekly
The 29 needs about 60% weekly
The 100 can go two weeks before needing about a 75% change.

I hope this helps.

I do not overfilter with any of my AC. I use whatever AC is sold as appropriate for the tank size.

enough with the insults and name calling.
