Yeah, sometimes you get bag genes, especially if you're buying LFS discus. They are often culls.

Hey, I have a question for you since you keep discus. How hard really it is to keep the fish? I understand the water changes are hard but if water conditions are good, changes large and frequent ?
 
If your serious about keeping discus, I think you should read alot more on Simply Discus & make a call to Discus Hans. He would be a great place to get your stock. He is in Baltimore MD, so probably not too far of a drive for you in NJ. On Simply, they say the 3 most important things for being successful with discus are #1 start with good stock. #2 Clean water - nitrates around 5. and #3 good diet.
 
Honestly, I've found discus to be a very hardy fish. Once settled in... Read the post above me and take that to heart. Follow those three things and you can almost guarantee success.
A lot of info out there is poor, old info about the fragility of the fish.
