Hi All,

We posted this a few days ago and since then we lost 1 of the 5 discus. We really could use your help. We did a 50% water changed and dosed with Prazi again. I have provided as as many details below as possible. Disease issues first.

Issues / Symptoms
4 Fish in the tank total. Two added 4-days ago. When we added them we did a 40% water change. Note: We didn't have enough RO water so we used some tap water too. We also noticed within hours that one of the new guys didn't look good. he was darker then he looked at the breeder and he wasn't breathing out of both gills. They are starting to get skinny. We did a dose of praziPro and left the lights off all night. The new guy died yesterday. Before he died he started to loose the ability to swim and floated on his side, dark in color. Before that he stated by Clamping fin to 1 side, breathing from 1 gill Poop was white. We also see what looks like brown worms on the glass and in the water. We added some salt and increased temp to 87. We did another 50% water change yesterday and dosed with Prazi. After the water change the fish swam about and looked a little better. But, today the same issues. All water parameters are good save PH which did go down from 7.0 to 6.5 and back to 7.0 due to RO change at 50%. What should we do? we want to get them well and eating. We did stop feeding yesterday as they were not eating and we figured a day with clean water was good.
Options:
1. Carbon to pull out meds and water change again
2. Keep dosing meds as directed. We're on third dose (Prazi)
3. Change Meds to Metro or something else

Tank Setup:
We're new to Discus. I'll start with our setup. We have a 200G tank w/ sump filtration, turnover 5x -7x /hr, 40W UV (pumping a bit quick will be trying to slow it to correct flow). The aquarium is heavily planted and we have driftwood and some rock to keep PH at 7.0. We use almost RO water but the last water change we tried to use some tap water too and tested it for (PH, Temp, Nitrate, Nitrite, and Ammonia). The tank was setup for 2 months min without the discus. We move other fish out to add them once the cycle was done. Ammonia, Nitrite, nitrate all in line. We do add some small amts of fertilizer and carbon. have not added any in 2-weeks.

Fish and Behavior / Feeding:

The Discus are in the tank for 3-4 weeks max. We had 2 initially (3 in and 5 in). We added a 7-8 incher huge about two weeks ago. The new one bred with one of the others within the week. They protected the eggs for several days and then we lost them. Not sure they likely ate them. The third discus was getting lonely so we added two more Discus form the same breeder 2-days ago. We feed beef heart per the breeder. we try to feed pellets too but they never took those. We also gave some blood worms earlier. They eat them but don't go back to the other food. so, we stopped feeding blood worms. They also likely eat plants in tank.

Thanks for your help....

JP

The white poop sounds like an internal issue. Prazipro only treats tapeworm and flatworm. Metronidazole is only for Hexamita, which still leaves Nematodes. A better choice is Flubendazole, it treats all worms and parasites. Read post #83 here:

http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?30488-Flubendazole-side-effect....&p=737612

You can order Flubendazole here: http://www.igopro-online.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=flubendazole

Breathing from one gill sounds like gill flukes. Formalin-based medication should help.

I agree with jcardona and nik...Drop an airstone, keep water really clean, stop the prazi and try flubendazole. Did you treat the tap water with dechlorinator? What is your usual temp?

Thanks a bunch. The temp is typically 84. We raised it to 87. But, oddly the temp dropped and we had a heater issue in the last 24 hrs. So, it's 82. We are working to bring it back up to 87. should we use carbon before we change Meds?

You should take all carbon out. Discus tanks generally have no carbon and when using most of the meds mentioned the carbon should be taken out

i have carbon temporarily in my discus tank, but my tank right now is a hold tank for the discus till i move em to a 75, then i double i will be using carbon, but for discus AC (activated carbon) is only generally used for the begining month or so then its taken out, or those who use carbon in discus tanks, generally change them frequently. and if you do have carbon, yes, you should take it out when treating fish. good luck and hope they get better.

(and personally i dont use RO water, i live in chicago and do about 45-50% WC every other day on the hold tank from the tap, and i use prime for the water changes.)

I used to keep my Discus at 6.5PH and 88* temp. They seemed to thrive. Very difficult if you have a persistent disease looming though. :( Definitely try to get the temp up and I would stick with tap water that has been conditioned unless it is too hard.

make sure you get a discus buffer if youre going to use tap. get some air stones like everyone is saying, R/O water can be great, but theres a lot of inconsistency with it which is why i stick with tap. and remember that discus are sensitive to medications
