Discus or Piranha?

I would say go with discus. The upfront costs are a little more for discus, but they are totally worth it. I love my discus more than any other fish I have. Discus have a lot of tank mates and it can really be a show tank.

Wanted to thank everyone for the input. It is still kind of a coin flip at this point. I love the colors of the Discus and like a challenge now and then. On the other side I fell in love with the gold piranha years ago, at a pet store in Guam that got one in by mistake and got an exception from the law to keep it.

by gold piranha I'm assuming you mean Serrasalmus maculatus? If so you should realize that serrasalmus species should only be shoaled in very large tanks by experienced piranha keepers. Pygocentrus species are the piranhas that shoal. Serrasalmus species are normally kept alone.

If you mean a gold diamond S. rhombeus you can forget it. You need a swimming pool to keep more than one together. A 150 would be too small for one full grown rhom. They do grow slowly though so if you wanted to keep one you could keep it in a 150g for years.
