Discus Problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks alot for all of your replies! Sorry i couldnt get on here earlier. I am in fact doing tons of water changes and testing the water everyday and so far so good. I recently removed the divider because it seemed like the other fish were so concerned with the little guy on the other side, especially the fellow red melon discus. He seems a little less stressed since he pairs up with the other red melon, but he is still so thin and fragile looking. I set up a few hiding spots for him and recently established a quarentine tank just incase. I am looking at buying some more discus but unfortuanately there are no breeders/petstores that have them in my location. Well, i guess ill just wait it out? I was just wondering if it was a good idea to remove the divider or not...? Thanks, appreciate your guys' time ! p.s KindredSpirit those discus are aammaaaaaaziinggg !

In terms of the other fish i have in the tank, i have 2 ghost cat fish, 1 black ghost knife, 1 clown knife, 1 raphael and a 1 cory catfish and a fairly large pleco.

lol maybe I'm just really tired, but that post made me sad! :screwy: I didn't know that they were "mean" like that.

OP good luck to you

basically, in any group of discus, there is always a 'runt'. the typical pecking order that discus usually have tends to have one fish being the 'lowest on the totem pole' and get picked on quite a bit.

most times, there is not much you can do, other than to add decor to help create some hiding spots, feed well, and have no less than 4 discus to help spread the aggression out.

Thanks!

Remember: When purchasing new Discus, ALWAYS quarantine them like the devil himself gave them to you. At least 6 weeks. Always try to stay with one source.

Having said that ~

Until you master the art of Discus raising, it is really best to raise them in a bare bottom tank with daily water changes. I grew these from babies and they really are beautiful.

The best thing you can do for your discus now, is to gradually remove all substrate, and hit that tank with water changes water changes. Keep the lights off for a while and feed cbw if possible. Keep you temp at 86 for now.

Good Luck!

Alright, so based on the advice from KindredSpirit i should take out all my rocks (they are actually big pebbles that hardly cover the bottom which is super easy to clean btw).? I also have potted plants that i had placed in there that are growing rapidly which is suprising since the temperature is so high. Other than the big black pebbles and the plants, there are no other decorations in the tank. My discus seem to like to swim in/out of the plants so should i just remove the pebbles and keep the pottedplants?

Also, it would be impossible for me to get the other 2 discus from the same source since the lady i bought them off of claims she got them from Calgary (a city 8 hours away).. I think i am going to email her and try to fish out some more details but unfortuantely shes in Vegas at the time being! arrg

Deem, you have no substrate other than big rocks and a few potted plants? IF that is all you have and the rest is bare bottom ~ that is fine.

Remember daily water changes for a long while. The best thing you can do for these fish is fresh, prestine water for now.
