I think it mostly has to do with keeping up with the water parameters and ensuring that the water quality is near perfect.

just a bit more maintenence and some knowledge of thier needs. give them clean water, quality foods, and the right tankmates, and they are no different than any other fish.

keeping discus isn't too tricky but requires dedication regarding good water changes, not pouring in tapwater then adding prime, and setting the correct paremeters for the fish for example, my main tank is PH 6.5 86F and 8DH with nitrates less than 5ppm and i find that as long as these paremters do not fluctuate they thrive

Growing out juvies is time consuming and can be frustrating to the newbie. Keeping adult discus is easy if you keep a tidy tank.

It's actually pretty easy. For a beginner I'd recommend going with 4' of bigger fish. You'll pay a little more, but the bigger fish have a stronger immune system and you are less likely to screw them up compared to juvies (2-3"). There's pretty much three things needed to raise or keep healthy discus.

1. Feed feed feed JUVIES
2. Clean water
3. A stable PH is the best PH
