Discus tank set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Taras... I hope your fish work out for you. As long as you're happy with them...Anyways, your diet sounds fine. Most of us Discus "people" feed FrozenBloodworms(FBW's) Like anything else, it has to do with which brand you use. Most, including myself feed the Hikari brand. I never had problems with it. Less quality brands...problems. Hikari is worth the extra $$$. A diet of BH will put "shoulders" on your fish the fastest. Brineshrimp being the least nutritious of the foods, but good to keep the fish cleaned out, if they eat it. All the best...Bill

Thanks Bill. As i went home for lunch, i looked at my fish and now i am under the impression that some of them might be stanted. I will post some pictures later in the week to get members opinion on that. In any case, if they are stunted what should be done ( if anything ) to get them better/back on track? Also i was planning to purchase more fish from somethingphisy, but after your comments and after realising that some of the fish i got from that source might be stunted, I am having some doubts. Was that what you were referring to?

tara, for best answer and everything you need to know about discus. i urge you to sign up over at simplydiscus forum. all you need to know. vendors over there have some of the best discus around for good prices. the place you bought your previous discus are most likely more and not good quality. but as you get into the hobby you will learn what are good quality and not. best of luck.

+1 for hikari. so far, feeding hikari brand foods, not one issue. thats with all of their freeze dried, frozen, pellets.

if you are worried about diseases: boil a cube of BW til they separate or for 15 20 seconds.
nothing living, can survive in boiling water.

2. Lupin, bare bottom tank: unfortunatelly i've set up the tank about a year ago and kept some other fish in it so it would get cycled and well esteblished. I removed all the fish from the tank two weeks prior to discus arival and kept it running while feeding the filters with amonia. As of right now my water is crystal clear and all of the parameters are within range even though I feed discus 3-4 times a day. I am vacuuming the substarte after each feeding and i am checking the water parameters daily. WC two times a week at 20-25%. Plants and driftwood provide my fish with paces to hide in if they get scared from my children running pass the tank. Would you still recommend taking all out of the tank and make it a bare bottom tank? What would make my fish stunned?

Hmmm...Could you please post pictures of your discus? At this point, I am uncertain if your discus are still stunted or not. The source you bought from is shady from all accounts I've seen. If stunted, there is no way you can reverse it.

Here are a few links about stunting for discus.
Are my fish stunted?...
Are you thinking about trying discus...

Sorry for the delay, too much work + kids soccer practices... Will try to post pics over the weeked. Really apreciate all of your advice and comments.

Ok. Here are the best that I could do without professional camera, please forgive me for poor quality (comparing to other ohotos i've seen here).
