Discus Tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depending on the kind of adults you're getting and all the other stuff you wanna do, you're looking at a grand, give or take. Discus are not cheap.

+1 it could cost you a grand depending on what you start with. you can find a setup with discus if your lucky for much cheaper but I wouldn't count on it. We're just trying to keep it real so you don't set yourself up. Why not get angelfish?, way cheaper, pretty similar but if your looking for color I don't think it would work for you.

well, if your set on a biotope it's actually cheaper and easier to maintain. you'll only need about an inch of sand since discus biotopes have no plants except for some floating. lots of wood though and that could be a bit expensive. imo, manzanita is the perfect wood for discus. as for the fish. it's hard to find juvie wilds. most are about 4" and you'll pay from 50.00 and up depending on thier size. you will need at least six. do not get heckels. they are the hardest to keep. you can add cories and/or tetras but stay away from serpae's. they are known fin nippers. cardinals could work but could also be an expensive snack for adult wilds. rummy nose and lemons are two of the best schooling tetras. I have 25 lemons with my wilds and they get along fine. if you are not going to try to breed, tap water will be fine, otherwise you will need to use RO. discus don't need or like bright lights so with no plants you can use a cheap fixture. make sure you have more than enough filtration and large wc's are a must. lots of good info here or go to simplydiscus.com. discus are not as hard as some would have you believe, but do require more care and maintenence. although I'm not new to fishkeeping, my wild tank is my first try with discus and my tank has been running for 18 months without any problems.

Thank you, for your help. I think that I would only do a driftwood/bog wood bio-tope. So no Co2 for plants. So a maybe X6 adult discus. Some serpae's X10-12? Ember Tetra's, X10-12 and some aqua soil, amazonian?. For filter 350b Penguin or bio wheel emperor 400?

Gonna need more filtration than that. I would say a minimum of two AC110's. though preferably a canister or wet dry. Discuss need immaculate water.

6 adult discuss are also going to be pricey. Depending on strain you are looking at $60-$90 each. I know at 14 I didnt have anywhere near that. Though if you can afford it, it will be hell of a setup.

Though, just a warning, while discuss are beautiful fish, they can be a bit boring to watch. I know when I was your age I would have wanted something much more active. What about getting some severum and go the poor mans discuss route?

a good breeder to purchase from is Bill at Inland Empire Discus. He knows his stuff and can help you with any problems or questions you have. his website is inlandempirediscus.com if you want to call him 909-349-0033

Discus Hans FTW! I bought all of my discus from him and would never buy from anybody else. For a Breeder to call to check on the fish was such a welcome experience. His Discus are high quality as we all know and is a wonderful person. Discus are very difficult if you slack on tank maintenance. If I were to do it again I would have a fully matured tank ready for them to move into. Listen with open ears to anybody who gives you advice. You will need it. Check out simplydiscus.com for some excellent support and food mixes. Good luck!

Thanks for the support. Im just really into discus as my dad owned a breeding pair when he was young. I will see if it is a realistic goal, in year or so as I accumulate supplies. I might be able to get my hands on a old 75 gallon setup from a friend. (Not Discus) :( Is it possible to get like 2 and each month add more discus, till 6? (If the setup is ready?) Thanks again for your guys help! :D

You could also get a breeding pair and have only 2 Discus. However, a proven pair will run you about 400+.. depending on the strain and size. It's better off to get all the Discus at the same time, to avoid aggression problems.
