I have had my discus tank for several months now and have had a fair amount of good luck raising them so far . That being said i have run into some difficulty as of late. i recently added a large snakeskin discus to my existing population. He or she is the biggest fish in the tank now and it seems that by adding this fish to the tank has changed the tank dynamic. The prob I am having is that my 2" red marlbro has been hiding in the corner and hasn't moved from that spot in about a week. I am worried that if this continues the fish will not last long. i also have not seen him eat in that time. i have a small quarintine tank that i could move him to but i'm not sure if that would be a good idea since discus prefer the company of their own species. Please help ! Open to suggestions. thanks

size tank? what are the other fish in the tank? how many discus? size of discus? whats your water change schedule? how often do you feed? is it a planted tank or bare bottom?

45 gal corner tank. Five discus total. Mostly adolescent with the snakeskin being the only full grown fish. I have an eheim classic 2215 canister filter and also a whisper 30 power filter. 50% water changes twice a week. Feed 2-3 times a day. Variety of flake and or frozen blood worm or beef heart. Also six adolescent botia loach: 3 yoyo and 3 angelicus. 10 neon tetra.
All was fine for the first couple weeks but it seems that the addition of the larger fish has stirred things up. I think the 3" blue diamond may be harassing the smallest discus

Id say more space is needed. Ur fish seemed stressed cuz everywhere they go their bumping heads. Also tank is only 3 weeks or fish? If tank is new it prlly isnt cycled but if it is disregard that, id say all these guys would thrive in a 75-125gal!

If you have another tank id seperate some of the species untill you can realalisticly buy a bigger one!

id say ditch all the otherssince your max with 5 discus in a 45g. remove all decor as discus under 4" should be raise in bare bottom tank. how big is your biggest? alot doesnt advice adding a big discus to a group of juvies. you should also feed 3-4 times a day and up your water change to around 50% daily if you want good specimens

Thanks for the reply. The tank isn't new but I think you are right about the available space.I'm planning on building a new 240 gal in the next couple months to address that problem. Just hoping to keep all my friends happy and alive until then. thanks again for the advice

Def. going to move the tetra out of the tank and bump up water changes for the time being. I don't think there is enough room for loach in my other tank so just going to move forward with new tank build ASAP

theres no enough room for your loach in the discus tank either -.-

I wouldnt move the little guy out I would move the big one out. When you have aggression issues if you take the smallest out of the tank then the aggression moves to the next smallest and so on. Honestly a 45g corner isnt the best footprint for discus to start with but ok for growing out some juvies for a bit. If what you had was working before seperate the biggest until they get bigger then try again. And I have seperated bullies before into their own tank for a while before so a new pecking order could be established.
