I have a discus that turned black. I have been advised to use table salt. I have 29 gallons so I should put 29 tablespoon. Should I dissolve the salt before I put in the aquarium? If I continue to use the salt forever would I kill them in the long run?

Also when I make a water change would I need the water be the same temperature of the aquarium or can I put in cooler? Temp is about 29C and the new water would be around 20C.

Thank you

A discus turning black is never a good sign. You added way too much salt. It should be 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. Now what are your water parameters? Is the Discus eating? How many Discus are in that tank?

As to answer your question regarding water temperature, it should always be the same or a little bit higher than the tank temperature. 20C is too cold and could be a reason why your Discus is becoming stressed out.

About salt I am still asking I have not added any salt yet.

1 discus
ate 1-2 bloodworms

So better heat the water before I make water change then.

Discus do better in groups of 5 or more. I suggest getting 4 more... Heat the water and make sure the water is the same ph when adding it back into the tank.

Don't use table salt, use aquarium salt instead. Table salt contains iodine. As for water it should be same temp, your stressing your fish with the difference.

There has been no proof that iodine affects fish. Only a lot of rumors. I have used table salt before when I didn't have aquarium salt and my fish had no negative affects from it.
