Discussion Thread: Toughest cichlid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I forgot about tilapia! They use them in catfish ponds and water reservoirs for plants. They thrive when packed together in ways that would croak anything else. Usually they're not even fed -they can live off micro particulates in the water and off other fish wastes. One of the reasons it's important to know where your dinner comes from. Some of those fish farms are real nasty.

Haha probably was happy when I found him in the hopes for food. Never seen a other fish eat like those O's. they might be prone to HITH but other than that IMO they are pretty tough not in as much in an enviormental standpoint but from a being able get neglected (already been touched by other posts)and beaten by other more aggressive species. I agree with the convicts 100% though!

Dont think o's would stand a chance against most ca's

This is just a Discussion I thought would be interesting to start to hear everyone's opinions. what is the Toughest cichlid? Not meanest or most aggressive but most a tank like and can handle various issues.
I say Oscars because they grow faster than 90% of everything and they EAT ANYTHING. And they are damn near impossible to kill. I have kept O's with Jaguars, Devils, and a Grammodes and have only lost one, and it was a few inches smaller than the Devil. Point is they can take an asswhoopin. Also my Brother ( Was unaware of this) was mad I wouldn't let him get an O so he bought a betta bowl and had the O in there for a month. Found it when I was his room he had It behind a dresser. He said he got in About a month ago and IT WAS ALIVE AND SOMEHOW HAPPY. Hit him up the head and had him take it back to the LFS. O's are little beasts
Way to go there bucko! Slapped that smile right off that little oscar for bein so dumb and happy in that little bowl.
:pYou make us all proud!:p

I guess you could say that aggression and toughness can go hand in hand. Like I think a full grown dovii would survive with most any other cichlid, also not any more prone to diseases than any other cichlid as far as I'm aware. Although for non aggressive I would go with Oscar as well just because it can handle some of the tougher cichlids.

Convict.

Convicts forsure. Chucked my old pair in the 200 litre water change drum because they were causing mayhem in the main tank, went away for work for 5 days(I left the power head and heater running) and when I got back they were aggressively guarding a clutch of eggs on the inner wall of the drum. It was in my back yard too middle of winter where the temps most nights are 3-5 deg Celsius.

I think EBJD are the toughest! mine survived in my fishnet for 30 seconds out of water, and he beats the crap out of my molly. What a tough beast.

buttikoferi are pretty tough in all manners lol
not to mention theyll go pound for pound with
a RD or a male dovii. heck my 12" butti made
my 20" jar look like a tamed pup lol
