Sorry to hear... can you tell us anything about your set up or how long have you had your fish? I hope it doesn't happen again.

I've never seen this disease before, ( i've had cichlids off and on for years) Anyway, I have a 225g tank, I first lost the umbee's one at a time. the biggest went down first when he reached about 5". then one at a time they died off. the last two i put in a 20g tank to treat easier. I treated with Furan-2 for bacterial infections but had no effect. a couple months went by and the Zonata showed signs. Swollen lip was the first sign. (he actually spawned with the female at this point). 2 weeks later he died. No other fish are sick right now. It almost appears like the fish get to a certain size, 5-6" and start getting sick. I have seen some posts indicating this may be a virak infection, like herpes that presents under stress. I know my water conditions could be better so maybe i'll start using carbon again to increase water quality.

I lost 2 beanii from it during last summers heat wave. It is considered an acute form of columnaris. I had also never experience it in 50 years of fishkeeping.
I have found info stating it is especially virulent in tanks over 84'F.

It took about 3 days after appearing for each of the adult beani to die, no other fish in the line of tanks were affected. But they come from warmer waters in nature.
I now have new beani that I am keeping in the low 70s, and have turned off the heater as of about a week ago.

If it is a acute form of columaris there's less than a 50% chance with treatment it would of survived.By the time you see physical signs that something is wrong it's usually pretty advanced.Take it as learning experience and next time if it does happen again you'll be a little bit more prepared.Hopefully it doesn't.

Thats def a bactirial infection aka duck lips, the hump is puss building up under the skin, and the fish can be saved. It looks very far along, better to start treatment when lips start to swell. Better to put him in a small hospitsl tank. No heater, daily 50% water changes, metro +, bifuran, salt, force feeding w focus and or other internal bactirial meds. I have had this problem 4 times and only lost the first fish....

Acctually am battleing it now with one of my female fh, she got almost as bad as yours and know is almost 100% better 14 days of treatment, stop force feeding after first few days, she is know eating again, swelling is almost gone, any questions you can pm me,
