Based on the aqualog book, the main differentiating method between p palmas and p buettikoferi is the presence of a fishbone pattern when viewed from above (indicating that its a buettikoferi). Given that the book is somewhat dated already, is this still the best way to differentiate between the two?

basicaaly, the color, headshap and the patterns. The buettikoferi have alot of yellow on them.

palmas palmas are usually darker in color with camo type colors and buetts have more yellow and a light tint of purple (at least mine has a light tint of purple pattern)

The buetts' common name is "gold dust" bichir hence the yellowish gold color.
