Haha I had the same with an Eheim 2213... but rather than 2 weeks, try 6 months ..... that was very, VERY unpleasant ....

rofl...what i do is i rinse it out. take the filter apart and dip it into hot water with aquarium salt in a bucket to kill w/e nasty things are in there.
