Dither fish for Bichir?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, what about keeping angel fish with bichirs? If I get a group of 6 will that work in a 75 or too much bioload. I usually do water changes once every 2 weeks and hope the plant load can reduce some nitrates

No bichir may nip at their fins

So my bichir is still growing. It was growing up really quickly but then slowed down at 10 inches or so (which I've heard is normal for this species). Regardless, it's in a 75 gallon for now. The thing is that, I've only ever seen him out and about at night. During the day, he always hides in the same spot. I was wondering if increasing foliage and adding dither fish would make him feel safer about coming out during the day. There were a lot of plants at one point, but it's as if he has fun ripping them out at night. A lot of them also died because of the weak light I have (I don't want anything too bright for him) for my 75 so I'm looking for some good low-light plants that grow fairly fast. I will be dosing ferts and injecting Co2.

Even if it doesn't, I'd still like to add some good fish that won't eat him or that he won't eat that could live the rest of their lives in the 75 while I move my bichir out eventually.

What type of plants?
If you are just using Java Fern and Moss I would suggest silver dollars as dither fish
I’m using Vallisneria, crypt lutea, Anubias nana, Anubias bartering, and water wisteria. I don’t think silver dollars are gonna work sadly. Really would love to keep them tho!

Hi! What species of bichir is it? Usually from my experience bichir are very secluded creatures and mine seldom stays near the sides of the tank in his cave. Adding plants def makes them come out more since they will feel safer. I would recommend Vallisneria and any root feeders like crypts or swords. Buy root tabs and have a decent light and they will grow. I feel like co2 is unnecessary for low light plants and will just result in excess algae. Water wisteria is also a low light fast growing plant. If you want more input you should post this on a new thread. That way MFK members can readily see it and get you a more experienced answer!

Hi Rayfish! i also have a lapradei bichir , i ordered mine via my LFS thru ''aquariumglaser'' in germany it was also about 11 inches and maybe even 12 now! , since its a lower jaw species. I thought it would go well with my 4x smaller bichirs ( 3x sene 1x endlicheri ) which at the time were about 4-5 inches since where im from atleast for the past 6 months there's literally been 0x bichirs to buy thats over 5 inches ... , so long story short i now have 1x lapra and 2x senegals.. :( and im super duper lucky and found 2x more 1 ornate and 1x delhezi! my ornate has ADHD or smthing i think CONSTANTLY moving i was surprised about my senegals but my ornate is from another planet i've had 1x ornate and 1x endlicheri very long ago that didnt last extremly long when i was new to the hobby , ( maybe 3-4 months ) pretty sure the ornate got swim bladder and the enldi got bullied by a pleco at night since i never saw anything during the day... sry for rambling. i myself am thinking off adding some dither fish in hopes that my ornate will calm down a little since he's constatly smacking the glass which anoys me at bedtime i actually got 2x mikrogeophagas ( bolivian rams ) which i got from a fish auction ( my first time ever being at one ) and i just heard to word geophegas which i know works with bichirs tough these ones dont get that much bigger then a german blue ram and are currently about 2.5-4 inches i've had them with the bichirs for almost 2 months without any issues and im thinking of getting angelfish but im still a bit uncertain if i just get 1x or 2 and simply pray its 2x of the same gender.. i had 2 angels trying to mate in my 190g and they took over half the tank and would constantly bite my oscars any time i went to feed them. ( the oscars were so cute thye literally just let them bite them ) they ofc didnt leave any marks or did any real harm but it really says alot about the oscars imo , BUT i dont want oscars with my bichirs they are way to crazy during feeding and i tried putting them together and they literally took shrimps from the bichirs mouths ... :/
