that royal GT was my favorite fish of all time. however, I wanted to start a tank from scratch that was strictly amazonian. i returned him in return for a cichla mono... and have regretted it since... but the GT would tear my plants up... but if i see them again im sure i'll pick one up cuz that guy was the balls. he grew to about 6" and his colors were really bright. i recommend the Hikari bio-gold. expensive but the results were very obvious...

anyways, after that painful reminder, i didnt want to use silver dollars due to their habits of munching on plants. i have java fern and amazon swords, with a mother plant. i also wanted to stick with an amazon fish... so this is not looking good. oh well, the motoro wouldnt like all that activity up top anyways, cant win em' all.

ummm when did you bring him back? Did you bring him back to Steve a couple of weeks ago? Was he super active and eat like a pig? If so, he is in my avatar.:)

you are absolutely kidding me... THAT'S MY BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was supposed to get a percentage, how much did you pay for him? at least you know how to take care of him... he's a big fan of hikari bio-gold... that's how i got those nice colors out of him... man i'm jealous

i feel like you snagged my exgirlfriend or something... i just watched the video of my old GT, and you're doin the same stuff with him i was... he used to challenge me like that everytime i walked by... that was our special thing. hey, i'll trade you my ex for that GT back... this must be how those dirtbags on daytime tv feel when they watch videos of their girls with other guys... jk

hahahhahaha this is too funny. I almost feel bad. Man I had to buy him. He was the best looking GT I have ever seen in person. I paid 50 bucks for him and I would have gladly paid more. How the hell did you grow him out that quickly? Water changes? anything else besides the food? he seems to really like krill. How old would you say he is?
The one I got way back when ended up being a female. I gave her to my brother but I may get her back and see if I can get them to hook up.
Seriously he is nice. I plan on getting a big 220 or so after I move in FEB. So he will be very well taken care of. If I can get them to spawn I will definately send some your way if you want them. :o)

Oh yeah do you have any photos of him from when you first got him? I kind of keep now and then shots.

Did you try fishbase.org? Here are some pictures of the similar Brycon hilarii I obtained through fishbase:

The redtail brycon looks very similar, but doesn't have the black coloration from the tail extending into the body.

i will send you those, and i would really love to get a male from those two. he was kept in pristine water and fed a variety of food, which was stapled by hikari biogold. he ate krill, bloodworms, blackworms, and ghost shrimp... i just showed my girlfriend the video without telling her what it was, and she said... "that's your fish!!!" when i returned my fish (leopard ctenopoma, cichla mono, xingu I and odoe pike) the GT was the only fish i actually wish i had back. but he'd ruin my project now, which is a heavily planted motoro/pbass 220gal. tank.

The project you have going now sounds pretty kick ass. I think you are right as far as having a GT in there would probably be a bad and expensive idea. I will gladly give you a male(or a few) from the spawn if I can get them to hook up. That leopard ctenpoma was yours too? That guy was huge. and awesome. BTW he is already sold too. He was gone the other day.

I like using geo's for dithers in SA tanks. I would worry though about the possibility of them digging up your plants and stuff when they sift through the sand. They are real colorul though and very entertaining to watch as they go through the substrate.
