Basically, a dither fish is a fish of another species that keeps swimming around. In nature the presence of other fishes around means that's no menace (especially no PREDATORS). When a fish can't see any other fishes around, there's something wrong. A pred or something else scared the others, and these seek for shelter. That's why a dither fish makes the "main" fishes more confident... They feel there's no preds around, no menace to them, and keep more time in the open.
