i have used large wild type mollies and swordtails in my central american vieja tanks and they look great. very natural looking.
but since Tilapia buttikoferi are west africans and very aggro, large african labeo type cyprinids/barbs MIGHT work in a large tank. but those type of barbs are rare in the hobby. so the next best thing are large/fast asian barbs.

Honestly I wouldn't mind if he demolished 20 dithers if it got him out of the rocks while I was in the room. He come's out for food if he's hungry, but after that he's gone if I move.

Ideally id like him as a glassbanger.

cool. i also enjoy it when my solo cichlids "attack" me when i peer into their tank/territory. lol. i dare not put my hand into their tanks. (tank cleaning/maintenance is such a pain. literally.)

yup, aggressive things ftw, my FH is ok with me, but anybody else causes problems. The butti is still small, he's about 4.5" or so, im sure by the time he's 7" he'll be a little bruiser.

5 silver dollars in an aggressive cichlid set up and it was the silver dollars doing the damage to each other than the cichlids..... SD's are very fast.

or tinfoil barbs but they might be a little slow...?
