Dithers for ATF

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I call BS on Brycon beings poor dithers..... Dentex maybe, but to categorize all Brycon based on the Dentex gives the puddy cats like Melenopterus a bad name. My Melons get chased, descaled, and tattered fins from a Lemon Fin Barb. They're harmless elongated silver dollars.... lol

IF you're after dithers that don't mind the current I'd say give Masheers a try..... That's what I'll be using once the Tigers get some size to them :)

mahseers could be costly dithers. plus they have super shiny scales that the ATFs love to target. i think they are coldish water fish but i'm not sure.

Do you have personal experience with any of the fish in this thread?

My Tigers live with a flawless Bala shark, so do all the Odoe, Dorado is with the Masheers in a tropical temp tank just like the Masheers have been raised in for years, and my Aimara is with the Lemon fin, Dorado, and pair of Brycon. Now aren't all these fish supposed to just "hate shiny scaled fish"?

Someday you guys will learn that everyone's experiences differ..... Seems like a whole different world when it comes to Characin temperament in my tanks.

Sorry to thread jack, but with dithers, I'm very particular about the fish I buy for my tanks. I love the idea about masheers most likely wont be able to get my guy order them at the lfs. I do love silver dollars though, so can I get an ID on this SD I found a picture of online? I really like the color of it. Would look good in another tank after using a couple of them to train my tigers!

I got six tigers all around 5-6" in a 125 gallon. I recently just purchased a vittatus to add with my goliaths and all he targets is my goliaths. There is 3 tin foil barbs, 1 pink tailed chalceus, and 3 silver dollars and they are all spotless. My tigers seem to ignore everyone else and target each other. I had to separate my vittatus for a couple of weeks now. I reintroduced him into the tank for a couple of days now and everything is good so far. I am going to go out and get maybe another 3 bala sharks around just incase it might help spread the aggression if it comes back.

And I have over 4000 gph of current in my tank and my silver dollars are fine they even beat the barbs to the food. They are about 2in long not that big
