Maybe try Giant Danios. I had luck with them in my Jack Dempsey tank. They are very fast and usually stay at the top of the tank.

+1

My festae has had a dozen giant danios in her tank for about 6 months. Since then she has managed to pick off 3.... but I knew they would eventually become snacks.

Here's a tip. If you are going to use dithers that can be eaten, they stand a better chance of survival in larger numbers. 5 or less, and they will get picked off for sure.

yeah def try danios, or tiger barbs again but make sure to add a large enough school (over 10) with only 3 they wouldn't have schooled together properly and so would be more vulnerable to attacks, with a big school they all swim together and can all see where the predator is coming from (the bigger the school the better they will communicate and the faster they can react), also if you want to try the tiger barbs again (which have worked for me in the past since they have a higher body) and you cant buy them bigger, then try setting up a temporary smaller tank to grow them out a little bigger and then feed your big tank A LOT of food so that they are completely stuffed and then do water change and add the new fish after you have drained and right before you put in the new water (i think that would give them the best chance of all finding each other and forming their school before the cichlids can even think about trying to chase them, (also if you have fed your guys live feeders then it probably wont work, i would stick with only feeding them dead things or live insects but not live fish)
GOOD LUCK

I have tried Giant Danios and Convicts, all of them were murdered or abused in minutes. I managed to rescue four of the seven danios and rehouse them. I had to put the surviving Cons with my Senegal Bichir. The only survivor in my Festae tank is a little female Con that sticks close to the biggest male Festae. She lives without fear and actually goes after the smaller Festae. She's a dither gone rogue! I think she is awesome. No other soul has lasted this long with my juvenile Festae.

Sounds like you might have one of those fish that just won't accept dithers....

I might try to go with some giant danios because I only have a 90 gallon tank and silver dollars or tinfoil barbs will get too big to keep in my tank for a while.
How about australian rainbows? anyone had any experience with them?

I have silver dollars in with my festae. I try to stick with south american fish but I also have a bala shark that I had for years they're pretty quick

Giant danios are your best bet IMO. They are fast, they are hardy, and they are cheap.

I have several species of rainbowfish, and I can tell you they wouldn't survive an aggressive festae. They are not quick enough, and they tend to panic when things go badly. They also don't school together like danios so they would be picked off easily.

would a school of both giant danios and tiger barbs work together? or would that be too much fish. because to me aren't very attractice but I do like the look of tiger barbs
