Based on your criteria, medium sized Roseline Sharks would work.

Or, spotted silver dollars they are dumb, hardy and dont get too big.

X2 to both of these suggestions.

Roselines are awesome but can sometimes be a bit expensive.

The spotted sd's only grow to around 4.5" vs the normal 6"+ silver dollar.

Like what? Not to be smart, just out of curiosity. I mean plants and stuff are way out of the question with big cichlids.

Are Roseline Sharks the same as Cigar Sharks? If so they can reach 2 feet.

I have Silver Dollars and Tin-Foil Barbs, works out really well.

No, they are Puntius denisonii (they max around 4.5)

Actually with the right diet and tank Silver Dollars can get to 10+inches.

I feel ya on that, they seem to be semi-fast growers and I'm sure there's some monsters out there but that's why I wrote 6+". It seems that on average in 99% of aquariums I have seen I don't see them much larger than 6 or 7 inches.
