DIY 120 Stand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is simply a sublime piece of furniture you've made. I'm in the middle of upgrading from a 40-gallon to a 120-gallon (60" x 18" x 26") and I am looking to replace the horrid particleboard stand I got with it. You have incorporated many of the design ideas I want to implement (e.g. magnets in lieu of hinges to increase accessibility) and shared brilliant ideas I'm adding (e.g. linoleum bottom inside the cabinet). I also appreciate that you included your impasses, as mistakes are the best teachers and they give a lot of insight to anyone wanting to try something similar. I do have one question though: I was thinking about using lap joints rather than butt joints for the vertical pieces; is this not needed because of the dowels and pocket screws (I was under the impression that a lap joint would be stronger)?

How did you get such deep screw head sinking, mine never sink that low.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

Sorry for the delayed response. Been away for work. Lap joints would be stronger but, in my mind, unnecessary not to mention the increased level of difficulty. My stand could hold my truck. :naughty:

The angle of the pocket screw jig makes a huge difference. I finally found an angle that worked well for me.
