Hi everyone!
I’m new here but I have been reading a lot about 3D backgrounds and stuff on this forum and others for a while. Some of them are really awesome and I can’t wait to try my own!! My 75 gallon tank has been bare and boring since I got it because the goldfish I keep produce too much waste to have gravel, river rocks, or any substrate that catches it. Sand was always taboo before but now I’ve looked into it and tried it in my 15 gallon with no problems especially when mixed with gravel. The sand stops the waste from getting too deep in the substrate.
Now that I can have substrate and time, I want to decorate it in Kingdom Hearts theme and add a hydroponic garden on top that flows down into the tank via mini waterfall. The tank will also be planted but I didn’t want to draw all the individual plants…the trees themselves took long enough. I got my inspiration for the trees from http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?211530-NEW-Corner-bowfornt-3D-background . I’m also taking from the plastic rain gutter lighting DIY but I’m not sure on which lights yet. I want it to be med-high light.

My main concern is the trees and ornaments. It seems like making the tree models in foam is the best place to start then cover them in cement or fiberglass. I like the look of Joey02’s fiberglass more but from what I’ve read, there’s a lot of debate on Bondo’s safety… I also want to make the ornaments from other materials and then seal them with a clear safe substance… I don’t want to use silicone because of its rubbery texture. Any ideas/materials/brands that have been used with success?

Oh, and the water level is about 4” lower because I’m have lilly pads that are going in this tank and I would like to see the tops of the pads. The intake will be next to the left tree and the output will be inside the left tree, flow through the hydroponic garden, to the right tree and down the rocks into the water. I would also like to have bubbles come out of certain spots on the tree roots. I’ll probably have to run airline tubing through the trees to make it happen.

Thanks in advance! I promise to start a new thread once I start on it so everyone can see what happens.

I am sorry that I don't have much to offer, as I am a totally NEWB when it comes to DIY own stuff, however KINGDOM HEARTS!?!??! You mean the game with Sora, Kairi, Roxas, etc? If so, THAT IS FREAKING AWESOME!!! :D

Yup! That's the plan! I'm a newb as well but I'm hoping someone will stop by and give me some hints. I really wanted to add something for Axel but all his stuff is too pointy :(

Oh that is so freakin sweet!!! Lol that is true, Axel does have some pretty sharp stuff. ;) Oh gosh how I miss playing KH!

Anyways, I personally like the look that using foam with cement basically gives you, it's seem to be fairly easy and looks GREAT!

As for making ornaments and stuff, some people use clay and make some pretty neat stuff, you just have to find a kiln to fire them in. Although you can make nearly anything out of the foam though it seems.

You could try joining Aquaria Central and posting it in their DIY section as well, it seems to get more traffic :)

Alright, it's posted on aquaria central. Thanks for the tip!

I might make the trees out of cement but how would I get them to be brown?

You can use a solvent- voc free epoxy resin, a little pricy but will work great for coating and waterproofing, not sure if it will work on the tree Ive never painted over it so unsure of the results

Do not buy the resin in home depot it will kill the fish

I can let you know were I bought mine if you want.

There also is cement color dye out on the market as well, I'll try to find the link and post it for you :)

This shows how this person made this awesome coloseum like decor, I think it should help, it's VERY detailed http://www.badmanstropicalfish.com/articles/article90.html

You could always put sand or small gravel over the silicone to hide it. I don't know if it would help but here is a link on how someone made a waterfall for their terrarium http://www.lizard-landscapes.com/how-to-build-a-waterfall.html

Jeremy: I'd love that link. I am on a budget but it'd be interesting to see what the ingredients are. The person who did the 3D corner bowfront used bondo fiberglass resin which can be bought at home depot though I don't know if he's had any problem...

Dani: Are the dyes safe? I'll look into it but I don't think it will be able to do the chocobo or small HP or money balls so I'll need a sealant anyway. It would definitely help with the trees though. I really want the colors to be exact so if I could use and acrylic paint and then seal it with something clear, that would be ideal.

After all my searching, I think I found my answer!!

TAP Plastics: GOOP Coat-It. I think I would allow longer for it to cure than it says but if applied correctly, it seems like it should be ok. Some other people have used it but said they had trouble with longevity but then said they may not have mixed it well...
