I highly suggest NOT building it directly on the back glass. I did this with a background idea once and trying to remove all that silicone when it either fails or you decide to try something else is a real pain.
 
I would like to disagree.

Styrofoam need not seal. Its not easily breakdown even in saltwater. We just cover it to make the look natural.
It may breakdown in the end but takes decades if not centuries in aquarium. You can google properties of Styrofoam.

Cement or concrete does leach chemical until it is totally cured. During cure time, test the PH andf when it is stable, It is cured. It won'Rdxxdxc ?d fc t harm a bit.
It may shift PH a little bit north but if PH under 8.5 and stable, fish wouldn't mind except wild caught.
