DIY 45 gallon tub pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Instead of sand on the bottom you try pine or cedar shavings like they use for small animal bedding.

Never put fresh conifer wood of any kind into an aquarium! The sap and oils are very irritating and toxic. It's okay to use old, waterlogged conifer wood, but never fresh shavings or other parts of the tree that haven't been cured out by aging in water.

Very sleek build on the box. Serious skills right there.

We didn't go bigger this time mainly because this was our first attempt at building a tub pond like this. In the future we'll probably go bigger. Also it's pretty easy to move inside if we wanted to do that for the winter. (and 45gal was the biggest container target had)

As for what i'm putting into the tub, i haven't decided yet honestly. I'm torn between livebearer colony or a pair of rainbow cichlids or paradise fish. I's love any suggestions though!

Finished the frame today!!!

First I added a layer of primer

Then a layer of water proof paint!

Hopefully putting the plants and water in tomorrow. I'll put the fish in when its warm enough. (and once i finally decide on a fish)

the pond is finally filled! took forever, but i got the water and plants in today. The water that i used to fill it was a combination of treated hose water, water from a water change of my 55 gal and the water from the container holding the plants. ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite all at 0ish. pH is 7.0-7.2. Fish will be going in as soon as the temps permit. Right now i'm leaning towards a pair of either paradise fish or rainbow cichlids.

That looks amazing. Great work. I do hope you can go with the paradise fish. What is the high day temp and the low night temp? Got to know how far it swings. Farther the swing, narrower the selection of potential inhabitants. Heck, axolotl might even work if it's not that thermally stable.

i think guppies also would look sweet because they like to hang out at the top
