I decided to do some work on the design of the cover. After many thoughts and designs, I have sketched this out.

The way it works is as the water level rises and the air gets forced or pulle dout through the purge tube, the air will start to get forced to the sides of the cover. Especially after the water level get to the point of touching the cover, all the air will be forced to the sides and pushed around to the purge tube.

Well the bucket and the lid came in today.

I did some work on the bucket. The purge tube you see I may redo. I think its a little short.

Clear tube is the purge tube. Air would travel through the pump. Hoping once flow is achieved through the intake, as the bucket fills up, air would be pushed down through the purge tube and out the bottom.... when the pump is active.

The Photo below show a piece of pipe...I think it was 1" that I inserted into the flange adapters to smooth the transition

I am loving this project and really really can't wait to see the final results.

I've been considering do a project akin to this one and your post is an incredible resource.

I do have a few concerns though that you might be able to address:

1) I realize that the bucket is the PREMIUM quality bucket that is THICKER than the one you can pick up at Home Depot... will this added thickness be able to handle the pressure of being a CLOSED system?

2) which such a powerful pump, will the force of the returns be ok for your fish, or will it mow them down? (you initially posted "OVER 900 GPH Filter flow rate from a QUALITY PUMP") and vice versa... will the intake from the aquarium suck your fish into it?

and lastly...

3) what were your plans for return hose? solid PVC pipe or a bendable tube-pipe ?

Thanx... loving the info!
