Someone should really learn more about filtration. Canisters are not inferior to sumps by any means. In fact IMO they are far more efficient.

Wow alot of guys on here must be rich 5 fx5's would run me around 3000.00 here in canada. Make something lots of ideas on here.

If you keep an eye on Kijiji and Buy n Sell you can sometimes pic them up used. I found one for $180. Works perfectly. However, they might be a bit scarce up in The Soo.

I've read many former sump evangelics return to canister filters and said sumps are not worth it. Guess each has their own idea about it.

I had a sump on my 315G tank and it worked just fine as far as biological filtration goes but you really cant beat the mechanical side of a canister filter. I think a combination of the 2 systems would be the way to go if I were doing it again. The OP said they were not interested in a sump. Again, a pool sand filter followed by a pool DE filter to polish the water sounds like the way to go.

What type of base for the bottom of the tank are you planning on using gravel or sand? If you are using gravel, I would suggest under gravel jets to create some movement at the bottom of the tank and keep filth from settling and make whatever filtration you do decide on more efficient.

I have used both on Larger tanks... each has it's merits... but I am a Canister guy.... The amount of top offs was what did it for me with the bigger tanks... my Sumps created way to much evaporation with all the open water movement (this is case specific though and no reason to choose 1 type over another) after it was all said and done... I just created my own large canister system though which does give as has been mentioned "better" mechanical filtration... Biological filtration wasn't an issue with either for me though although there are some people on here that have had very serious conversations with regards to 1 vs the other... in the end it was a dead heat on who won the debate so... what ever you choose is based on your personal prefference....

I also enjoyed how much quiter my canister system was compaired to my sump... but also this is a personal reason and not a reason for a debate or a reason to choose 1 over the other
