Why not just drill a couple larger holes, and slip store bought airstones in to the larger holes, then bond them into the holes?
 
The only way I see it exploding is a drastic temp change. Just boil it and let it sit until its luke warm and mess with it, just don't splash any cold water on it lol... But I think you should drill it then boil it just to be sure anything contacting your water has been sterilized.
 
Pumice stone would work better for making into a air stone. Its naturally porous for fine bubbles and easy to drill into for the airline.

For drilling that rock you'd be best off using a drill intended for ceramic/tile/glass.

In the past I've cleaned rocks from the beach using Milton Sterilising Fluid which is meant for sterilising baby bottles etc.
