koo, but i think the egg crates are enough for the cover, isn't it? the acrylic seems a little redundant

egg crate wont do much for evaporation

O RLY?????? nice work but isnt just the acrylic top enough??? wat is the eggcrate's purpose???

Acrylic will sag over time. I thought 1/4" would be ok, but it sagged into the water over the course of a month.

good work, now just hinge on the other piece of acrylic and find a way so the top piece can attach tot eh egg crate as not to move around

as rally said that is why i use both acrylic and eggcrate. acrylic that wouldnt sag would have to be 1/2" thick and that stuff aint cheap! a full sheet of eggcrate is 10$ and the acrylic was 10$, an all-glass top is 35$ plus shipping(10$), or at my lfs it is 50$. big savings to give up a little bit of better looks.

velcro tabs along the rim of the tank could be used to hold the top in place. hinges can be bought at any LFS if wanted but im cheap, its either hinges or fish! my lid was the solution to not having enough money to buy a glass lid.:)

Nice cost saving DIY. Thought about something similar but on a larger scale for a large plywood tank.

Can you possibly take a pic from directly over top this seems like it would work great for my pond but i would like to see how to top view would be before i did it thanks. Great idea

i will once i switch my tanks over today.

neat idea :)

i dont think the egg crate is going to help the sag tho.
im thinking it will just curl up in the corners.
but only time will tell.
gl :)

oh and might be able to go to a glass shop and buy some scrap pieces and have them cut it to size for ya for cheaper then one at a lfs.
just an idea. :)
