using glass from another tank is a cool idea. You should go for it!! There's plenty of knowledge to tap into on this site and I think it'd be really satisfying to build your own tank.

first time building a tank. I figured id build somthing smaller like a 30 gallon or maybe a 55 for a practice.

I'd suggest that you make your own dimensions so at least when you are done you have something that you would like a little more. Like I know if I made a 55, it would probably 48x21x13. 21 inches wide, and 13 inches tall, so at least you will get a tank out of it that you could get no other way.

i started with a 82 gallon "practice tank". we just had re done our kitchen and i saved all the 3/4in wood from the old cubbards and made a tank 32longx24x24 and paid $25 for a 1/4 piece of glass. i already new i would be using liquid rubber for my big tank so i just bought a 5 gallon bucket of it. but besides that i only paid 25 for the window and then used less than a half gallon to seal it.. they will ship you a 1 gallon of LR zavlar for about 80bucks witch is plenty to cover roughly a 100gallon tank or less

now i want to find a 55gallon and make a corner tank haha, make it 4 foot squared and not very high. thanks for the idea guys...... now just gotta convince the wife :)

sounds like a good plan,

4'x4'x18" with the stand built to house a sump thats also 4'x4'x18" (just slightly smaller to account the the wood thickness) build the sump completely out of wood and simply coat it in liquid rubber aswell....

got yourself about 350 gallon right there. (if my workings are correct.)

not ideal for monster fish, but perfect for a reef setup......;) surley your wifey wants a nemo? lol.

haha been there done salt water and not goin back my uncle runs a business taking care of rich ppls tanks lol i never wanted to stick that kind of money into rock alone. she has her own puffer tank im not even Gunna mention nemos lol. that's still seems not right and crazy to me that the glass from a 55 is thick enough to support 300 gallons of water just because you don't build it tall. crazy how some stuff works isn't it?

go even cheaper an as mentioned make a sump. work out the builing an the sealing with out the glass. Certain it could be a great working sump. Then build around it after your practice run with a nice size tank. craigslist is awesome place. got my 125 and 55 free. not set up because of money but they will be someday.

has anyone built a tank and made it 4 foot squared from a 55gallon? if so can someone post a link i want to see what it looks like. i won't be able to build one for my house because my diy 300 and 82 gallon plus my 150 is more than enough already. but i might be able to talk family or friends into funding me to build one for their house
