X2 here. Im sure it will work great until it doesnt.

Fluidized filters have to have just the right flow to keep the 'sand' in suspension.
If you've ever ran a protein skimmer you know how much fun it is to tune
everyday till you forget to check it and it vomits all over everywhere.

Biggest risk here is that it works for awhile
the flow slows
the sand settles
and you have a full-on Mass Extinction Event (MEE)

well in my case i wouldnt be using sand... id fill it with bio balls or scrubbies or ceramic media.

put a pre filter on the pump

That would help and hurt.
The pre filter will still pass smaller debris into your tube.
Whatever media you use will act as a poor mechanical, trapping that tiny stuff, but allowing the even smaller particles to flow right back into the tank.
It would be the same as setting a canister/sump up with just bio media.
You are going to need the pump in a good spot you can reach, for cleaning the pre filter also.
Depending on how your tank is stocked you could end up with a nice little nitrate factory unless it was cleaned often.
My question is why do you think you need this?
Are you having ammonia problems?
If you are doing a DIY just for the "kick" of the build, that’s cool, I can understand that.
